The story behind our Bornholm tableware

Eat-on-bornholm.com is a Bornholm-based company that has designed and developed a very special dining set, using only nature's own products and Bornholm craftsmanship.

The dining set consists of Bornholm granite, wood, ceramics and glass, products that are all found on Bornholm. It's a design that is optimally flexible, allowing you as a customer to create your very own oak tray that serves as a holder before, during and after serving.

In all versions of the base plate, called “Harmony”, ”Symphony“ and ”Balance", it is possible to choose between granite, glass, ceramic and wood for each of the 3 cut-outs.

The customer chooses whether they want granite, wood, or perhaps a glass plate in one of the cut-outs that the material suits. Should the bowls be blue? Turquoise? Red? Green? The choice is entirely up to the customer, which makes this Bornholm dining set unique. The many different combinations make it possible to add accessories on an ongoing basis, so serving the same guest will feel new from time to time.

Who is behind Eat-on-Bornholm.com?

Behind Eat-on-Bornholm.com is Per Andersen, who was born and raised on Bornholm. Per has developed, designed and rethought the entire concept of the company's products himself. The inspiration came from a family member, who one day contacted him and suggested that he should develop something new, conceptual and contemporary, with respect for what is essentially Bornholm.

Within a year, he had developed, designed and customised this unique dining set. Hundreds of hours, many line drawings and many stages of development have gone into the process from when he started until today, when the products are available for purchase.

As all products are as nature created them in terms of colour, no two products are exactly the same, even if the product designation is the same. Danish design is internationally recognised, and with this dining and serving set, Bornholm is now also at the forefront.

The island’s natural environment provides these ingredients.

Ceramics is handmade, the glaze developed for Eat-on-Bornholm.com's products, a handmade and moulded product, so there will be natural deviations from product to product.

Granite are quarried in different places on the island and are from different ages. The granite products found in the Eat-on-Bornholm.com product range are around 1.5 billion years old, created long before animals even existed. The granite is ground and polished to bring out the play of colour in each product, but even if it's granite from the same stone, no two pieces are ever the same.

The glass are carefully moulded by hand by the glass artist and will therefore never be exactly the same. Colours are carefully selected in collaboration between Per and the glassmaker to create the best possible experience in the dish.

The oak tree, The oak used for many of our products comes from Bornholm as much as possible. There may be periods when it is impossible to source Bornholm oak, and during these periods the wood will be purchased from various nearby suppliers.

Every wooden holder, plank, tapas bowl holder is cut, carved and lacquered by hand. It's simply solid craftsmanship, which can be seen in the two joints on the base boards themselves; on each side the wood is assembled by hand, ensuring that the cutting board does not warp if it gets damp.

Unique collaboration between local Bornholm businesses and the ideator contributed to the final result

Throughout the above processes, Bornholm-based companies are behind the beautiful finished products.

The collaboration between Per and the suppliers from Bornholm has been a very stimulating, inspiring and enjoyable process. Everyone has contributed to the finished product. “A big thank you to Chester, Jesper, Allan, Anette, Linda and Ingvard” says Per Andersen. On Bornholm, a deal is a deal, and this has been the case throughout the entire process.

Unique characteristics of the design

“As a starting point, my wish is to maintain the original appearance of the original Bornholm materials as much as possible,” says Per Andersen. ”So each product has been through an artisanal process that makes it usable for the purposes for which it was developed, the ceramics that are hand-turned and the glaze itself applied by hand, the granite that is cut on equipment that can handle cutting this very hard type of material, the glasses that require calm and careful hands, and all the wooden parts that are truly handmade of the highest quality. Together, they help to make the Bornholm dining and serving set unique.

Choice of colours and patterns

The function of the ceramics and glass plates is self-explanatory; they fit the two current versions, development and innovation are an unstoppable force. The wood looks the way it naturally does, the ceramics are characterised by the potter, the granite the same.

Colour choices and patterns are determined and developed by, and in, Bornholm's nature, on its terms.

Use for different occasions

There are countless uses for the Bornholm dining set. It can be used for breakfast, brunch, lunch, evening and night-time dining. It's entirely up to the customer to create the look and how they want to use it. The serving platter, in wood and granite, can easily be used as a dinner plate or for cutting bread, for example.

The individual way you can choose which product type to place where also makes it completely flexible.

It is ideal for a restaurant where customers can enjoy the unique tableware while enjoying their food. The quality of the dining & serving set goes hand in hand with the quality the restaurant wants to give its customers.

Care and maintenance of tableware

The oak plank, holder and bowl holder should be wiped with a wet cloth, do not put them in the dishwasher. Before use, we recommend that you apply food grade oil - available for purchase - and let it dry for a day. Do not heat the wooden parts, but use them at room temperature.

The granite can either be placed in a freezer if you want to serve something cold on the plate, or you can put it in the oven up to 250°C. The surface is cleaned with dishwashing liquid and a brush. As it is sanded at the factory, it is scratch-resistant.

The glasses can be placed in the fridge to serve cold dishes. We recommend washing them by hand as the dishwasher will wear the surface over time.

The ceramic bowls are dishwasher safe.
