How to choose Danish tableware in wood, glass, granite and ceramics

Danish tableware design from Eat-On-Bornholm, featuring wood, glass, granite and ceramics

By Per Andersen, designer and founder of Eat-On-Bornholm

The right tableware design shouldn’t steal the limelight from the meal. It should enhance it, bring it all together and create the atmosphere you want around the table. Eat-On-Bornholm combines Danish craftsmanship with inspiration from Bornholm’s natural surroundings and a modular system where you choose the materials and style yourself.

Start with the meal – not with the cutlery

First, think about how you usually eat and serve food. Is it small shared dishes, a Danish-style lunch spread, sushi, tapas, steak or fish on a plank with accompaniments? Once you’ve identified your needs, it becomes easier to choose the base plate, inserts, bowls and colours.

Choose the material that suits the mood

  • Wood provides warmth and a calm, natural look. Choose from base plates, holders and serving boards in oak or walnut.
  • Glass adds light and colour. The plain-coloured glass plates are particularly suitable for cold dishes.
  • Granite lends a sense of substance and warmth. Granite from Bornholm can be used for both hot and cold dishes.
  • Ceramics bring craftsmanship and vibrant glazes to life. All the bowls are handmade and are therefore never quite the same.

Build your meal at your own pace

You can start with a single bowl or plate and build on that later. The Balance, Harmoni and Symfoni base plates provide the framework for various combinations. ‘Balance’ measures 275 × 195 × 25 mm, whilst ‘Harmony’ and ‘Symphony’ measure 400 × 300 × 25 mm – the same size as a standard placemat. The base plates can be turned over and used as chopping boards.

The modular principle means that the final design is entirely up to you. Swap a glass top for granite, add a ceramic bowl, or choose a different type of wood. The same components can be adapted to suit different meals and seasons.

Function and care must be appropriate to the material

Wood should be washed by hand and treated as required with food-grade oil. Ceramics are suitable for the fridge and dishwasher, but not for the oven or freezer. Glass is for serving cold food and is dishwasher-safe, although hand washing is recommended. Granite can be used in the oven up to 250 °C, in the freezer and in the dishwasher. Always check the instructions for each individual product.

Made in Denmark, with scope for variation

The products are made in various locations across Denmark by craftspeople using different materials and skills. The inspiration comes from Bornholm, and the granite and glass are produced on the island. The use of natural materials and handcrafted techniques means that the grain, texture, colour variations and small details vary. Consequently, each individual piece takes on its own unique character.

Three simple ways to access the system

  • Start with the base plate: Choose ‘Balance’ for a smaller envelope, or ‘Harmony’ and ‘Symphony’ in placemat format, and add inserts as required.
  • Start with the materials: Choose the wood, the colour of the glass, the granite or the ceramic glaze that you immediately feel at home with, and build the rest around it.
  • Start with the main course: Put together the components that suit the food you serve most often, and expand to other meals later on.

There isn’t just one right combination. The point is that the pieces can be reused in new contexts, so that the way the food is served reflects the meal, the season and the people you’re sharing the table with.
