The raw materials

Collaboration between local Bornholm companies and the idea man has created the unique dining & serving set. Companies from Bornholm have been involved throughout the development process. The collaboration between Per Andersen and the suppliers from Bornholm has been a highly stimulating and inspiring process, with everyone contributing to the finished product.

Eco-friendly aspects of Bornholm dinnerware

The starting point, as mentioned earlier, is to do as little to each product as possible, letting nature itself determine the colour and pattern of each product.

Each of our suppliers are local companies that care about the environment, nature and people. During the manufacturing of our products, these areas are always an essential part of the process.

We are working to develop our very own Bornholm packaging. Today, our packaging is FSC-labelled and the packaging material includes wood shavings from a local Bornholm sawmill. They are bagged, dried and then collected together with the ceramics and glasses, which also optimises the transport of goods.

“A big thank you to Chester, Jesper, Mads, Allan, Anette and Tobias” says Per Andersen.

We let nature decide as much as possible

The oak tree

The oak used for the oak Trioholder, which holds 3 tapas bowls and if you turn it over you have a serving surface, the oak plank with the juice groove that can go in the oven - on the other side is used to serve on, for the base plates themselves, Symphony, Harmony and Balance, which on one side has a cutting board function, on the other side with carvings, also comes from Bornholm as much as possible.

There may be periods when it is impossible to find Bornholm oak and during these periods the wood will be purchased from different suppliers.

But every single base plate, plank and tapas bowl holder is cut, carved and oiled by hand.

It's simply solid craftsmanship, which can be seen in the two joints on the oak holder itself, on each side there is a manual joining of the wood with a piece of wood, which ensures that the cutting board does not become warped if it gets moist.

Raw material

Granite

The granite is quarried in different places in the quarry and can be from different ages. But the granite types found in Eat-on-Bornholm.com's product range are around 1.5 billion years old, created long before animals even existed, granite is basically what half the island is made of. The granite is ground and polished to bring out the play of colour in each product, but even if it's granite from the same stone, no two pieces are ever the same.

The red granite is called Helletsbakke and is the most coarse-grained of the Bornholm rocks.

The black granite is the “King Granite” as Blå Rønne is also known, is the oldest of the Bornholm rocks and is quarried in Klippeløkken. In its raw form, Blå Rønne appears anthracite grey with reddish pegmatites.

Ceramics

Ceramics is handmade from stoneware clay, the glaze/colour and shape is developed for Eat-on-Bornholm.com's products, a handmade and shaped product, so there will be natural deviations from product to product.

The glasses

Glass is an amazing living product. The whole process of turning sand into glass at high temperatures, moulding and finishing a mass into a usable product is both a technically and visually impressive process.

The glass products included in our product programme are created in a glassblowing workshop on eastern Bornholm.
