From breakfast to tapas – here’s how to use the same tableware in different ways

A serving set with bowls and plates, ready for a shared meal

By Per Andersen, designer and founder of Eat-On-Bornholm

The best tableware is the one that gets used. Not just when guests come round, but also on a quiet morning, for a quick lunch, or on an evening when the food is placed in the middle of the table and shared.

The Eat-On-Bornholm tableware range is designed as a system that you can customise. The base plates hold the pieces together, whilst the plates and bowls can be swapped out depending on the meal, the season and the look you’re after.

A quiet start to the day

For breakfast, you can The Helle Bowl can be used for yoghurt, porridge or fruit, whilst a smaller plate provides space for bread, cheese or something sweet on the side.

A meal doesn’t have to be elaborate to feel inviting. When just a few elements come together naturally, even an everyday breakfast feels more peaceful and mindful.

A lunch that’s easy to share

At lunchtime, a wooden, glass, ceramic or granite platter can be used for rye bread, cold cuts, vegetables or small, warm dishes. Complement this with a bowl for salad, dip or side dishes.

Because the pieces can be moved around and combined, it’s easy to adapt the serving arrangement for one person, the family or a couple of unexpected guests.

Tapas and small dishes

When combining several subtle flavours, The trio holder with trefoil bowls A simple solution. Use the bowls for olives, pesto and nuts, and arrange the cheese, bread or charcuterie on the platters around them.

The trio holder can be turned over and used as a small serving board. That way, it can take on a new function when the bowls are placed elsewhere on the table.

Dinner with hot and cold dishes

At dinner, granite, wood, glass and ceramics can create different atmospheres on the same table. A larger platter can hold the main course, whilst smaller platters and bowls provide space for side dishes.

You can keep the look simple with just a few colours, or let different glazes and materials come together. There isn’t just one ‘right’ combination. It is precisely the choices you make yourself that give it a personal touch.

When guests come round

The set can be expanded to accommodate guests. Several plates can be joined together, and the bowls can be arranged so that everyone can reach them. This makes it easy to start serving in the kitchen and let the meal unfold at the table.

At the same time, you can repurpose the same items in new ways. A breakfast bowl becomes a salad bowl, a small glass plate becomes a cheese board, and a serving board can be used to present some sweet treats to go with your coffee.

Carry on building slowly

You don’t need to put the whole set together in one go. Start with the base plate, the plates and the bowls you’ll use most often. Later on, you can add a new colour, a different material or an extra size.

That way, the table setting isn’t a fixed formula, but something that can adapt to your meals and your life around the table.
