Materials and craftsmanship

Eat-On-Bornholm develops the collection in collaboration with skilled Danish manufacturers and craftspeople. Per Andersen’s designs and Bornholm’s natural surroundings are the shared inspiration throughout the development process.

Eco-friendly aspects of Bornholm dinnerware

The starting point, as mentioned earlier, is to do as little to each product as possible, letting nature itself determine the colour and pattern of each product.

Our Danish partners place great importance on materials, quality, the environment and people. These considerations are consistently taken into account in the manufacture of the products.

We are working to develop our very own Bornholm packaging. Today, our packaging is FSC-labelled and the packaging material includes wood shavings from a local Bornholm sawmill. They are bagged, dried and then collected together with the ceramics and glasses, which also optimises the transport of goods.

“A big thank you to Chester, Jesper, Mads, Allan, Anette and Tobias” says Per Andersen.

We let nature decide as much as possible

Raw material

The oak tree

The oak used for the oak Trioholder, which holds 3 tapas bowls and if you turn it over you have a serving surface, the oak plank with the juice groove that can go in the oven - on the other side is used to serve on, for the base plates themselves, Symphony, Harmony and Balance, which on one side has a cutting board function, on the other side with carvings, also comes from Bornholm as much as possible.

There may be periods when it is impossible to find Bornholm oak and during these periods the wood will be purchased from different suppliers.

But every single base plate, plank and tapas bowl holder is cut, carved and oiled by hand.

It's simply solid craftsmanship, which can be seen in the two joints on the oak holder itself, on each side there is a manual joining of the wood with a piece of wood, which ensures that the cutting board does not become warped if it gets moist.

Raw material

Granite

The granite is quarried in different places in the quarry and can be from different ages. But the granite types found in Eat-on-Bornholm.com's product range are around 1.5 billion years old, created long before animals even existed, granite is basically what half the island is made of. The granite is ground and polished to bring out the play of colour in each product, but even if it's granite from the same stone, no two pieces are ever the same.

The red granite is called Helletsbakke and is the most coarse-grained of the Bornholm rocks.

The black granite is the “King Granite” as Blå Rønne is also known, is the oldest of the Bornholm rocks and is quarried in Klippeløkken. In its raw form, Blå Rønne appears anthracite grey with reddish pegmatites.

Raw material

Ceramics

Ceramics is handmade from stoneware clay, the glaze/colour and shape is developed for Eat-on-Bornholm.com's products, a handmade and shaped product, so there will be natural deviations from product to product.

Raw material

The glasses

Glass is a truly fascinating material. The entire process of transforming sand into glass at high temperatures, shaping it and finishing it to create a usable product is both technically and visually impressive.

The glass products in our range are manufactured in Denmark.

Danish materials and craftsmanship

Materials with a life of their own

The grain of the wood, the minerals in the granite, the glaze on the ceramics and the shifting light in the glass are all part of Eat-On-Bornholm’s aesthetic. The materials differ in appearance and texture, but they are designed to come together around the same meal.

Per Andersen draws his inspiration from Bornholm’s natural surroundings and from the marks left on materials by time, the weather and craftsmanship. The products are developed in collaboration with Danish manufacturers and craftspeople. Everything is handmade, which is why each piece is unique. Slight variations in colour, texture and shape are not flaws. They are the mark of the material and the craftsman’s hand.

Warm veins and a surface that changes

Wood brings a sense of calm and warmth to the table

Eat-On-Bornholm’s base plates, serving boards, platters and bowl holders are made from oak and walnut. Every piece of wood has its own grain pattern, colour and history. When you choose a wooden product, you are therefore not getting a replica of another, but a piece with its own natural character.

The wooden components are cut to size, shaped and oiled by hand. This manual craftsmanship preserves the wood’s natural character and incorporates its visible variations into the design. With use and care, the surface gradually evolves over time and becomes part of the meals the product has been a part of.

WEIGHT, TEXTURE AND THE ISLAND’S GEOLOGY

An old material finds a new place at the table

The granite comes from Bornholm and was formed over a period of around 1.5 billion years. The stone is cut, ground and polished to bring out its play of colours and minerals. Even two slabs from the same block of stone can have different veins, grain and shades. This makes every granite slab unique.

The collection features ‘Blå Rønne’, with its dark, cool look, and ‘Helletsbakke’, with its warmer reddish tones. The granite lends the table setting a natural sense of weight and complements beautifully the warmth of the wood, the soft shapes of the ceramics and the light reflected by the glass.

Shaped, glazed and fired in Denmark

The traces of the hand become part of the expression

The bowls and plates are made from stoneware clay. The shapes and glazes have been developed for Eat-On-Bornholm, and each product is shaped and glazed by hand. The positioning in the kiln and the movement of the glaze during firing mean that the colour may be slightly lighter, darker or more vibrant from one product to another.

It is precisely these subtle differences that give the ceramics their personal touch. A bowl or plate can fit into the overall tableware set whilst still having enough character to stand on its own on the table. The glazes are approved for contact with food.

Bright colours and motifs from Bornholm

The glass changes its appearance depending on its surroundings

Glass begins as a hot, molten mass. In the hands of the glass artisan, it is shaped into plates featuring colours, patterns and motifs inspired by Bornholm. Light passes through the glass, altering the perception of both the colour and the food served on it.

The glass plates are manufactured in Denmark and are available in a range of sizes and styles. Some are plain and monochrome, whilst others feature a textured surface or motifs with a particular story behind them. As they are handmade, there are slight variations from plate to plate.

Your choice will become part of the design

The materials come together around the meal

The Eat-On-Bornholm tableware range has been designed so that wood, granite, ceramics and glass can be used together or separately. You choose which materials to place where, and can change the combination as the meal or occasion changes.

A Danish lunch platter, sushi, tapas, steak on a plank or fish on a plank can take on its own unique character depending on the materials you choose. That way, the final design becomes your own.

Long service life and new possibilities

When the materials need to be moved on

We choose materials that can withstand everyday use and fit naturally into daily life. The products can be used in a variety of ways, and the individual pieces can be rearranged. This extends their useful life and makes it possible to change the way you serve food without having to replace the entire set.

If a product eventually reaches the end of its useful life, its materials still have potential. Wood and ceramics can be taken to the recycling centre for recycling in accordance with local sorting guidelines. Glass can be remelted when sorted into the correct category. Granite can be reused directly, adapted, recut or ground down for a new purpose without losing its strength or natural character. The specific sorting options may vary from municipality to municipality.

The packaging has also been carefully considered as part of the overall concept. Read about how we use Danish-made FSC®-certified boxes, hay or straw from Danish fields, Bornholms Tidende and Hammershusgarn when we pack our products.

Eat-On-Bornholm

From nature’s materials to your table

We want the materials to be noticeable when the table is laid. The warmth of the wood, the cool weight of the granite, the vibrant glazes of the ceramics and the light reflected by the glass give each serving its own character. The craftsmanship brings the pieces together. You decide how they should be combined.
